SUMMARY:Birthday of Publick Universal Friend (1752)
DESCRIPTION:Born Jemima Wilkinson in Rhode Island on November 29, 1752. After a near-death experience in 1776, the Friend declared independence from gender and spent decades preaching, advocating against slavery, and founding a religious community. The Friend refused gendered pronouns and is recognized as one of the earliest nonbinary religious figures in American history. The National Park Service page about the Friend was deleted in early 2025 as part of a federal campaign to erase LGBTQ history from government websites.
